My macbook pro 16" 5600m gpu 64gb ram running Catalina 10.15.7 runs perfect on it's own. Never had an issue. Just got 27" apple studio display today and when it's plugged I'm getting some apps that freeze. Brave browser freezes when I go to any google site logged in (google, gmail, youtube). Also telegram also is very slow and freezes - when I type the letters chug onto the screen a second after pressing the key. Ive tried on mirrored and non-mirrored. Most apps seem to work just fine. It's not an issue with the hardware not being good enough (macbook's fans arent running, it's not hot, it's not trying to do much work), and I can still render video fine etc.

Why are simple apps freezing when the display is plugged in? It's like the iphone chip inside the monitor is screwing up the feed it gets from the mbp intel chip. Is catalina not supported. Seems like this display has too much tech.... Just need it to work.

I tried looking to update the display but when I go to software update the display doesn't show up. So it either doesnt need a software update or my mbp isnt recognizing that it does. idk what to do. Do I really need to update my operating system to use this display? I don't want to update it just to have it not fix anything.

  • 21.5-inch iMac (2017 or later)
  • iMac Pro (2017)

Ah thank you. Funny I read that list to make sure my mbp would work but didnt even think to look at software requirements. Apple tried too hard with this one 😂

Found a fix to use the monitor till I upgrade if anyone's in the same boat:

I think I will cave into the upgrade for Ventura. I guess it's time. Only a month or two till that one is released. I'll just upgrade all my software at once. Will be like a new computer with the new display and OS.
