I have a new 16'' MBP that always crashes if I leave it in sleep mode overnight (or after a certain amount of time -- fairly long, not sure exactly) with a USB-C 2 TB "MyPassportSSD" plugged in. This exact same drive is my primary boot drive for a 2016 iMac, so I don't think there's any problem with the drive itself, but when I switch to using my MBP as my primary computer rather than the iMac, I like to leave it plugged in as it has all of my photos and music and etc on it, and Dropbox doesn't work and play very well with such a setup.

Any idea? I did a quick search and found many people complaining of similar issues, but no solutions. My 2016 iMac also has a strong tendency to crash if left overnight with a mini-displayport monitor plugged in, so a quite similar problem but not exactly the same. MBP is on 10.15 and iMac is on 10.14. Crash logs clearly indicate a problem with the drive but it's a mystery to me as to why my MBP would not like it, but my iMac would use it for months as its primary boot drive with no issue whatsoever.

I have had a new 16" MBP for about a week.
Got a kernel panic after leaving it asleep overnight after about the second day.
Did the following:

Turned off "Power Nap" in Energy Saver settings.
Reset the SMC.
Installed the latest Beta 5 of the upcoming Catalina 10.15.5 release.

Since then, no problems.
