Cold to the touch (all around). Fans are not spinning. SOC temps around 42 degrees. MacBook Pro 16, M1 Pro.
Strange, Stats reports my SOC is 42, and the metal is warm. I guess since the enclosure is smaller, the metal gets warmer on the 14 than the 16, even if the SOC is the same temp?

Could be.

I had the 2015 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pros and the difference in thermal performance between the two of them was huge. The fans came on with a relatively light load on the 13 and it got hot quickly.

Also, I use Firefox with Ublock Origin to watch YouTube videos.

Ah, so the M1 16" is colder than the M1 14", despite having more CPU and GPU cores on the base model than the 14 base model? Is it as cold as the M1 13 and M1 Air? Do you happen to have iStat menu or Stats (free) installed and know the temperature of it doing light tasks?
Sorry, don't have those apps ready. I don't have a 14" or Air for comparison myself.

Right now it's 38 average CPU with two browsers with lots of tabs, streaming BBC World Service, nothing much. Sometimes it's warmer, usually when it hasn't been restarted for a while.

Interesting, how long did it stay at 38 or was that just at the beginning? it usually takes 10-15 minutes for it to get warm.

It had been operating all day when I looked yesterday. Today it's 43. I'm streaming the Masters golf tournament and casting it to my TV, which might be the reason it's higher now.

I'm running a lot of heavy apps on my 16" M1 Max (runs 24/7 with 4 x 49" external monitors) and the laptop is barely luke warm. This thing never overheats. The thermals on this laptop are 100x better than my previous touch bar MBP, which ran super hot. Not even close...

That's impressive. The 4 monitors that is. That it can run cool is even more impressive.

My Intel MacBook Pros are very unhappy with 4k external displays.
