The fan noise is starting to annoy me. In a quiet room with light usage I can hear the fans and its distracting. Please don't compare it to a 17" Dell etc. I'm used to dead silence from my old 17".

In fact, I still have the old one and powered it up to see if I could hear a difference. The fans on the unibody have a higher pitched sound. I checked fan speeds and both the fans in the 1st Gen run between 998 and 1002. With the same usage the unibodies fans are between 1975 and 2075.

Why the increase in revs? May seem like a small thing but its really make or break for me. I cannot stand noise, especially in a quiet room.

I'm also hearing a high pitched whine (granted its when my ear is 3 inches away). Wondering if its also the fan or that dreaded logic board whine the Y1 MBPs used to have!

eV

My fans run at that speed too. They don't really bother me; in fact, I couldn't even tell they were on and I was worried that they weren't. I have to put my ear about two inches away from the hinge to hear anything.

I will say that the superdrive is the noisiest part of the unit. It also vibrates/shakes the whole computer when it is spinning up. I don't know why, but it also freezes while I am watching a DVD and it says "Waking DVD drive" several times throughout the movie. Never really had that happen on any other computer.

Overall I am really happy with the computer, but customer service has been absolutely wretched.

I'd like to order a 17" anti-glare this week.

Is it safer to get the 2.8GHz for reduced fan noise and longer battery life

or is it better to get the 3.06GHz for resale value,
and is it a later generation processor?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

My fans run quiet in my 3.06.

I don't know how it affects battery life.

I am happy with my MacBook Pro 17 but I have a cosmetic issue that is driving me insane. I have an off center screen. Thin black border on one side and a think one on the other side. I have done searches, googled it and I wish there was an easy way to fix it. Apple is willing to replace it but I just don't want to wait 2 weeks for it. Is this common, has anybody seen it before, is there a fix??? Thank you!

*Edit*

I should clarify that this is an on-going review, where I continuously post my thoughts and discoveries as I use my MBP more and more.

_____________

Start:

Just got my MBP 17 with the listed options. I was really excited; I ran downstairs when I saw the truck out my window.

Opened it up, and was very impressed by the packaging.

I just cleared off my desk, and plugged in the computer.

Can I start to use it, or do I have to wait for it to fully charge?

I remember reading somewhere that I should wait for it to fully charge, and wait 2 hours after that, and then I should unplug it and use it until the battery is exhausted. I think this would be important for the first charge cycle outside the factory. The battery indicator has full bars, although the magsafe adapter glows amber now. When I first put it in, it was green, but it turned amber within 10 seconds.

My main concern before even using it is that I noticed that the bottom panel is "loose". When I press the center of the panel, you can feel a little give/play, and sometimes it makes a noise. Sometimes, I feel it even when I pick it up!

I didn't notice this on any of the units in the Apple store. I picked them up to see how they felt, and they were rock solid.

Anybody else have the same problem? Will Apple replace it?

Anyways, I am really excited to start using it. I can't wait!

I will keep you updated, and update this review. :)

BTW: What is that black plastic wrapping for that comes with the user-guide and the DVDs? It is just empty, black/clear plastic. It looks like it should have a DVD in there...am I missing something?

This is something like my 20th time calling Apple now, and I have been on hold for about an hour after being transferred 5+ times.

They have been unable to resolve my issue (replace my defective unit with a nominal unit).

What is going on with their customer service?
