its been said before, until software across the board supports multi-core it doesn't matter the hardware installed.

That's true. Snow Leopard will but applications won't. And it takes moths or even years before applications will gain support

Hyro....i'm in a simular sitch but not in college. I am going with the MBP 17" for now and hopefully will buy a Mac Pro next year or in the near-future. I think its a better time to go MBP then MP just for what is the timeframe of the chips being released. Everyone i know has had no strict limitation with the power of MBP for doing Adobe CS work. Even 3D for what i am trying to do. I would just get the MP later.

The only game I play is roller coaster tycoon, which can be run on a windows 95 machine. I use Crossover to run in it on my imac and have no problems.
@macjiro: I agree, I see many people bashing the quad core mac pro because of the price for what you get. Maybe the next generation will be better.

@Hellhammer, if Snow Leopard gets more efficient, won't that leave a liter OS, so in turn resource-heavy apps will gain some sort of speed boost?

17" no
MP no
get a 15" top of the line + external monitor for when you are in your dorm room
15" is more portable, and you'll get same performance
and the girls wont laugh at you for lugging the monster around

Where did you get the impression I was a guy?

The 17" notebook has the same resolution as the the 24" external, and its not like there's a 800$ difference between the 15 and 17" models (to be able to pay for the display) but I'll still keep that in mind.

iMac + MacBook. Best combination. Or if you can, refurb Mac Pro + refurb MacBook. Or even cheaper alternative, used Mac Pro + used MacBook. Get my drift? Yes, it's TWO computers, but one is portable, and one is non-portable, but more powerful. ;)

Yeah, the ultimate solution would be a mobile and desktop.
MBP and MP. Or not as ultimate a MB and Imac.

I was planning to go with a 15" MBP that wasn't the very latest release but had the 512 discrete VRAM and great pricepoint. But then it became unavailable. I think the best way is to just go with 17" now unless you find some special deal that i had found. For video-editing that extra real-estate is useful (in a mobile situation) otherwise yeah, just connect a large external monitor. I think its worthwhile to splurge that extra couple or few hundred here or there for the long-term if you're an aspiring professional artist of any kind.
