Do you have access to another Mac? The easiest thing to do will be to boot your machine into Target disk mode to attempt accessing the drive via Firewire. Creating a bootable USB environment on a 2009 (w/o Internet Recovery) would also require a working Mac -- Target Disk Mode will just be less work (assuming you have another Mac and a Firewire 800 cable).

Plug in your time machine backup drive, and reboot your system while holding down the option key. When the choice appears, choose your time machine drive as the boot drive. You should then eventually have the ability to run disk utility from the menus.

You're assuming that I have a time machine backup drive but I have never used it.
