lately my mbp has been sluggish and slow. is there any applications used to help speed things up? any suggestions are nice and appreciated

You need to give a few more details than that...
What software do you have running all the time?
What constitutes "sluggish"? Is it just generally slow or does it freeze and give you the beach ball:
Have you installed any hard drive format reading applications like MacFuse or NTFS for Mac?
The more details the better.

If you open up activity monitor what is running in there? Most likely you have one or two background processes eating up your CPU or RAM.
