Any help my MacBook Pro 2014 model has died. It’s being checked out tomorrow but it seem stupid if the issue is big to spend money on fixing a 7 year old laptop. So coming from a Pro is there much difference with the Air?

There is a £200/300 price difference in the UK hence why I’m thinking of getting a Air and not the pro this time.

I replaced my MacBook Pro 2013 with the new M1 MacBook Air base model. No regrets. Silent and cool machine. However, my needs are quite simple so it depends what you do on your laptop.

Having owned multiple MacBooks, MacBook Pros (including the M1), and MacBook Airs, the M1 Air is the best laptop I've ever owned. Whatever marginal benefit the enhanced cooling system of the Pro would offer you is easily offset by spending that same cash on the extra RAM. I doubt you would be disappointed with the Air.

There have been a lot of posts asking this same question. You might find reading this recent thread on the same topic helpful:

This. Upgraded Air is better in most cases than a Pro with lesser specs at the same price. Unless you really want that touchbar instead of 16GB RAM.

Let me pile on. I traded in my 2014 MBP for the M1 Air. Way better in every way. I'd say you will love it

One other thing, coming from a 2014 to the M1 Air - if indeed, your needs are marginally more extensive than this - bear in mind that the M1 has only two ports (one will be used for power - no MagSafe) and the remaining port will not be compatible with any 'legacy' devices you may use on your 2014 (like a printer, if not via Wi-fi), or if you hard wire your Ethernet connection. You'll end up needing to buy the applicable dongle or a hub (some of which are designed to attached straight onto the side - no dongle). Many out there - you just need to figure out what ports are most important to you. But its also more ££££ to the purchase price of a Mac.

Rumour has it Apple may be rethinking this whole less convenient ports situation, but for the moment, its what users must put up with.
