Would only work on charger. I brought it In to Genius Bar. They ran test saying battery is bad. Wanted $200 to replace it. The genius took it to the back to reseat the battery cable.

Upon return he says the unit will not power on any more. He says the will cover the $500 repair.

But says all my stuff is lost.

Damn.....that sucks big time. So sorry to hear you lost all your data. Just so bad.

What do you mean?
The MBP was working when you gave it to him, no?
You should not accept back if not working anymore, clearly he messed up and you have to pay for it?
Go back to the shop, talk to manager point out the machine was in working condition before the genius opened it up and they will have to fix it free of charge.
Where did you see that? I'm pretty sure that if you read the first post (one more time), that you will see that /macuser does not have to pay for the repair. He did leave a letter out, but fairly sure it says "... the(y) will cover the $500 repair."

Kinda sucks but I have copies of the data.

I still don’t know how it went from working plugged in with a bad battery to a non working brick. Not sure what the Genius did.

At least I’m not paying for the repair. But still it’s bad to damage customer equipment data.

Disclaimer is that they do warn you to back up before sending for repairs.

It’s a little hard to do when they brick it though.

I wonder if the Genious had it go south on him while trying to unglue one of those diabolical battery assemblies? :)

It’s sad that Apple chooses to make laptops this way.

There is nothing wrong with user replaceable parts like SSD, RAM, battery etc.

Soldering and glueing is just dumb. Especially when they don’t last.

Got it back today. New top case and battery. New logic board. Basically changed everything but the screen and Bottom case.

Yeah? Sounds like maybe they did damage trying to pry the battery loose. I did a battery change once on a MBP using one of those iFixit kits. Man that battery array is glued on there. I kept having to inject a little adhesive remover, let it sit, pry it up a little, inject more, let it sit, pry it up a little more. Seriously Apple?

Yea good enough just lost my parallels VM which I can always reinstall.
