OP --
Just wondering, do you ever put the MBP into a backpack?
If you do, is there much pressure on the case, from other stuff IN the backpack?

and this...
That is exactly the theory of the Genius at Apple... I don't buy it. Apple sells computers to students that can't survive in a backpack with student books?
I thought the same thing, but it appears that the contents of the backpack exert a greater force on the MBP than one would expect. Making it worse is a backpack with a greater carrying capacity, or heavier items carried along with the MacBook. My 2018 had some marks appear, which managed to wipe off. My 2014 never had this in 3 years, but the 2018 got it within a month or two. This may also be a result of a change to a larger Thule backpack to replace a slimmer InCase. I use a piece of microfibre (the thin, lens cleaning type) cloth that is a little larger than the keyboard to prevent the contact. I’ve had no issues since starting to use it.

I keep the paper sheet that it came with on my keyboard when I close it. I haven't noticed any marks and mine is about 3 years old.
I would not use paper, it’s hard and pretty abrasive.

I have owned many Lenovo Thinkpads and have NEVER had the keyboard mark up the screen.
My old Thinkpad did it all the time. I ended up buying a spongy screen protector designed for the purpose. The gap between keyboard and screen was a fair bit more than that on the current-design MBP, allowing the thicker protector to fit.

The issue is not that apple won't replace it, but the fact each repair requires you send the laptop in and be without your computer

I've never personally had an issue with an Apple repair, but I read some had to argue to have their screen replaced.

...and yea, agreed. Having any downtime when the Mac is used for work is not good.

I've not had these problems with any of my MacBooks: 2008 17, 2014 15, 2015 15, 2015 13.

My laptops are usually on a desk or table, open or closed depending on the external displays. I carry two of them in my backpack. I generally don't put a lot of other stuff in my backpack.

I have this exact problem. I also have the Apple Care Plus, should I take it in for repair? After reading the replies to this thread I do have to note that my laptop has almost always been on a desk open and carried in an individual laptop bag with no sort of external pressure being exerted on it. Its a 2017 MacBook Pro 15" .

Yea it's definitely less than ideal. At least they're doing keyboard replacements in store now...

I think it's a good idea to keep around your old MBP after you've discontinued using it as your daily. That way, if your new one needs to be fixed, it's no biggie. You've still got another machine. My mid-2015 MBP that I just got used is probably going to be sent off for a battery replacement in a few weeks. Shouldn't really be a problem. I still have my early 2013 that I can use while it gets repaired.

YES! If you can get it fixed for free...DO IT! Apple should make these be able to handle everyday use. It's their fault, and they should have to fix it for free, every time.

I had same problem. My applecare expired. Do you think they will fix out of warranty?

Yeah, I had a 12" MacBook that basically had the entire keyboard + trackpad imprinted on the screen.

Genius Bar had the display replaced, no further question asked. So just bring it in.

Radtech makes specific cloths that fit perfectly over the butterfly keyboards to prevent just this issue.

I have this exact problem. Today I had my keyboard replaced under the new programme, but the guys at the repair shop (authorized, no Apple stores in Denmark) says that the problem is not severe enough for them to replace it, according to what Apple has told them...
