MBP and volume (sound)

When I turn on my MBP SR, the "velcome" sound clip is always played - even though I turned of sound before turning off the machine. There is also a problem with plugging in headphones - even though i turn off the sound before plugging in, the machine immidiatly goes loud (through the hedphones).

Any thoughts?
