Go to apple and ask for a loaner until your comp arrives. If they don't have a loaner, I bet they will suggest you to buy one and return themselves.

couple ways to look at it. apple really should stock a hi-res antiglare 'base' model in the store since there are many that would go for the model. they tell walk-ins, that need/want a computer right away, to spend a ton for the highly configured hi-res. doing what you suggest, is a good thing--if a lot folks do the same, it will force them to start stocking the base hi-res config - it's cheaper than taking returns.

another view is Apple makes monster profit and "their" return policy is already priced in. i bought one config of macbook pro recently and decided a week later i wanted another model. they happily exchanged, and i'm even more the loyal customer. since i bought a bunch of other things (monitor, etc), i had no reservations about the return. they made plenty off me and some guy got a great refurb.

screw ethics. its not even an issue of ethjcs. you think apple has ethjcs? apple is a genius at marketing not ethics. the no questions asked 14 day return policy js a big part of their marketing strategy. its great pr. buy and return and dont even look back.

Simple, buy the low end MBP with glossy display, try it and see if you like it, if not simply return it, before the 14 day period. I have two 15" MBP on 2008 matte, one 2011 glossy, you get used to the difference, truth be told you would be better off with a decent monitor for any accurate colour work.

I was very much against the glossy display initially, am not 100% sold on them yet I can see the benefit in day to day use.

There's A Lot Of Rationalizing Going On...

... but what else is new?

You know it's unethical, which is why you created a thread to obtain support for your plan.

Well, you've got it. The majority of respondents think it's OK and you can cherry-pick from a number of rationalizations and select the one that makes you feel the best about what you want to do.

There are options that would be honest and ethical, but they would inconvenience you and possibly cost you some money. For example, you could purchase the model you want from an online retailer and have it shipped overnight or 2nd Day Air.

The difference between an ethical and unethical person is that the ethical person chooses to do the right thing even when it may have some negative personal consequences. It's easy to do the right thing when it doesn't cost you anything...

Just keep in mind that it doesn't matter if there are people who think it's fine to do it. Good personal ethics is doing the right thing when others won't even know about it; bad personal character is when you resort to seeking the support of unethical people for your position. It doesn't mean that you are doing the right thing; it simply means that you were able to hook-up with similarly-inclined people.

Go to BEST BUY

See if they have an OPEN BOX .... Macbook Pro

This has already been sold, used for display and put back in stock.

You can buy that one, and then return it within their return period.

Because it is OPEN BOX there is no issue with restocking fees ( if BB even still has them )

Additionally you are not 'ruining' a new unopened unit.

I will often times go in, if they have an OPEN BOX unit of something I am thinking about buying I will buy that. If I decide I like it and want a new one I will return the OPEN BOX one and buy a BRAND NEW unit.

Best buy has 14 days no questions asked return even on refurb mbp.

I really don't encourage you to buy a unit to use in the meantime myself, however if Best Buy offers a 14 day no questions asked return policy, why can't you buy an open box MacBook Pro, and use it until yours comes? I've bought one (and not returned it) from my local Best Buy and they tend to have 3-4.
Since it's already an open box unit, it is already being sold at the discount price, and returning it should not affect this.
More ethical than buying a brand new unit and returning it?

"Screw ethics". There you have it folks: rationalization of poor behavior at its finest. 🙂

The only upside to your actions is +1 Mac to the refurb store that is brand new.

Seriously? I weep for our future. Can you explain "It's not even an issue of ethics"? I interpret your statement as: Person A doesn't have ethics so I shouldn't either. Really?

Have you tried Amazon? If not please do try. They have a one-day shipping and it might come out to be lower than buying in the Apple store.
I would not want to buy and return, but I can understand how stressful it can be.

Believe me there are a lot bigger issues to weep for in todays society than a return policy and the ethics of making a return. Grow up!
