There are times that I would like to initiate a phone call through a modem from my MBP rather than a telephone. Does anyone know of a free program that will do this for me?

It has been a long time since any Mac has had a built-in modem.
You're best bet is to use something like Skype through the internet.

no modem built into any Macs. just an ethernet port. pair the MBP with a modem/router (wireless) and an ADSL connection and you could use Skype with a headset? or buy a VOIP phone and call with Skype or a VOIP service if your ISP includes it.

Ok.
I can't find any telephony software for OS X. I think VOIP might be your best bet, whether it be Skype or some other service.
