My MBP has been freezing over the past few weeks. When the computer freezes, the mouse gets hypersensitive, then it will be unresponsive to everything. The screen then goes black. One of three things then happen. One, I manually shut the computer down by holding the power button. Two, same as one except I get a Kernel Panic text file on my desktop when it loads back up (this only has happened once), or three, the computer restarts itself. It once from while I was playing Call of Duty 4, and once right after I had quit it. However, I had SMC fan set high whenever I play it, my computer is on a cooling stand and there's an desktop fan right next to it blowing over and under it. Could overheating still be a problem?

My MBP is late 2008 refurb, 2.53ghz, 9600 w/ 512 vram, 5400 rmp hard drive, 4gb Apple ram. Freezing has happened under both 9600 and 9400 cards.

The 9600 and hard drive have both been replaced by Apple in the past few months due to other freezing issues (the 9600 was defective, but when it froze I would get screen artifacts and the mouse would still move– neither of those things happen now).

What do you thing is the problem?

There is the slight chance that the manufacturing plastic might still be over the fan vents and it is overheating. This plastic is supposed to be removed before the computer is shipped but sometimes some slip by. This would essentially nullify any positive effect the internal fan could have.

There's also the chance that one of the replacement parts is defective, or in other words, doesn't work with your system. Rare, but possible.

Probably won't fix it, but try resetting the PRAM, could be why the mouse is freaking out. Command-option-P-R while the computer is starting up, wait until the second chime to let go.

If this doesn't fix it, next time the kernel panic pops up, restart and report the problem, but before you do take a screen shot of the diagnostic information. It should describe where the problem is although somewhat cryptic.

You could also try safe booting. shift-command-V if I'm not mistaken.

Finally, in your case, this could be a problem with the hardware. Usually these types of errors are software based, but since you just had some parts replaced, it could be something else.

Thanks. I still have the text edit file with the Kernal panic info, dunno what I can do with it unless I bring the MBP into a mac store.

I don't think plastic over the fan could be the problem because I've sent the computer in twice to Apple and both times they had to open it up to replace parts. I'd hope they'd notice something like that. :p

I guess if it keeps up I'll reset PRAM then bring it in if it still keeps freezing.

I just get really uncomfortable talking to Geniuses, especially since some of them are jerks, some don't know anything about Macs, and others treat your claim like its some huge insurance scam.

If you c/p it here I might be able to figure it out.

You could try calling Applecare, if you have it. I've always found them hugely helpful and very polite.:)

Most likely overheating problem. Take it apart and apply some thermal paste like arctic cooling mx-3 or similiar

Actually, my computer is still covered under the I bought Applecare for it, although some Geniuses have told me that doing something as simple as changing icons on my dock could void it. :/

Also, is it safe to post Panic Kernal text in an open forum? That is to say, there's no way someone with the right know-how could exploit the information in one way or another?

Thats the sample one on the apple site. I believe you are looking for the bolded enlarged part.

Just froze again a few minutes ago. Had to force restart again.

I'm attaching the only kernal panic I ever got. Appreciate if someone can help me out here.

So I'm getting the feeling I'm going to have to send it in again, which means they'll probably wipe the hard drive. Which means I might have to finally get an external one to back up on.

first, thats pure *********.... second, yes its fine to put a kernel panic on an open forum... all anyone can see is what you were doing when it kernel panicked and what went wrong

I guess it didn't attach right.

And remember, it's frozen half-a-dozen times, but I've only got a kernel panic once, and it was after I restarted and logged back in. Then I got this text file on my desktop. I never saw that gray box with the power symbol and the different languages.

Here it is:

Kernel panics dont reveal that much information.
Its just a dump.

If your only troubleshooting though logs.
Ideal is best to look at the system.log
Its all date stamped and might see the culprit before the computer locked up.

However I recommend to verify disk inside disk utility on your internal HD and see if theres any corruption.

If theres none, look at your system.logs
