Right so after the disappointment yesterday, let’s see what your all thinking about the refreshed MBP…

Personally I feel like the redesigned MBP is going to get announced in October and ship in November, for many reasons:

1. If they wanted to ship anytime this summer, they would have announced it at WWDC, last year WWDC had 25 Million viewers, so a HUGE audience, coupled with the fact the MBP refresh is for the higher end models which has a developer target market it just would have made complete sense.

2. MiniLED, a few reports have stated that the redesigned MBP has been pushed back to Q4 2021 due to production issues and delays.

3. I feel like Gurman might have been partially correct estimates a possibility of it coming ‘as early as’ this summer… I think it was pulled from WWDC not long beforehand… I don’t know about anyone else, but I felt the final 25 minutes of WWDC this year seemed like it was just filled with unnecessary fluff, which I think was originally set aside for a MBP announcement.

4. An event in July means likely shipping mid August but in short supply (this to me seems too close to the schools going back as the vast majority won’t get theirs on launch day).

5. An august event makes no sense with the iPhones shipping in September.

6. A November announcement I feel is too close to the holiday season.

7. I feel the MBP refresh is to huge of an update to just have a press release, (redesign, more ports, potential XDR display, M1X or M2), it just seems like an ‘event’ type of announcement.

8. I think Apple are hoping to announce M1X or M2 and the refreshed MBP at an in person event rather than online only, and that is more likely towards the end of the year.

So what’s your thoughts?

Hoping for july, but the october/november you suggested seems realistic. Probably event, since redesign.

Hoping that opt-in/opt-out for miniled, figured it's not that important for me. My mid2014 is on it last, and as a photograhper I'm really happy about the return of SDcard.

And hehe, voted nov/dec because pessimistic and dissappointed that it didn't show up yesterday. The supplyshortage is real, and a delay was expected. I just got hyped up by all the rumours.

Yeah it definitely is real, and will gradually get worse unfortunately.

Personally I waited to purchase the M1 MBP to see what they brought to the table, now nothing has arrived, I have ordered the M1 MBP and will use that for a few years while the redesign matures and gets refined, I can imagine several initial issues with it mainly with the screen and possible issues with the redesign (hinge etc) and tbh, I don’t need MagSafe, HDMI or SD card slots I am perfectly happy with just USB-C.

In regards to miniLED, it’s ok but only for HDR content, it’s not a major need for me, the main thing I am concerned about is hating the Touch Bar lol, however, many users like it so I will just have to see how I feel about it.

I'm not one to necessarily buy into hype, but I'm not going to lie, I was pretty regretful buying my m1 mbp last week. Researching, I think nearly every thread or article I came across advised waiting. Whelp, I'm not a very good listener. Purchased it anyway and absolutely could not be happier for my purposes. Maybe I'll sell it next year, maybe I won't. I generally hang on to stuff a long time. Actually, it's why I dove into Apple with both feet a couple of months ago. I really wanted some better longevity.

Anyway, my m1 mbp is the most exquisite machine I've owned to date.

One can always wait. The most important thing is that you bought something you needed.
If my machine broke down today I would'eve just ordered a Air or something. You don't have to regret anything.

Glad to hear it, and tbh, other than a redesign, more ports and potentially a better screen, it’s only a faster SoC at the end of the day.

These devices get updated all the time, and there is no guessing when the next iteration is coming as we have just seen.

Yeah it’s looking like late 2021, but could end up being early 2022… who knows.

Why are we predicting anything since the last round of predictions failed? Here we go again. For me and many others will just wait and see what happens in the coming months.

Last time I checked this was a rumour/prediction forum, otherwise this site really needs to change its name to macwhatapplehavereleased.com

Nothing has changed apart from the (impossible to call) date when Apple decides to announce it - which they could do at a couple of weeks' notice, since it's unlikely to be an in-person event.

From previous years - September is almost always a "consumer products" (iPhone/wearables/music) event and if "Pro" Mac stuff does get launched it's usually happens in Q4, with or without a pre-announcement at WWDC. But this isn't a "typical" year for a number of reasons, so who knows?

Sept/Oct

In the past, Apple used different silicon for iPhone and Mac. It’s finally unified and development in-sync which allows Apple to announce both A15 and M2 products together as a pair. WWDC already indicated how Apple intends to unify the experiences.

TSMC wafer starts and Epistar test production of MacBook mini LED both reportedly began production in April and May, respectively. I would expect both to be completed within 4 months, plus 1 month for Quanta to ramp.

How many of these “next MBP” threads do we need?

Apple is having a totally online WWDC. Makes no sense that they’d wait five months just so they can have an in-person MBP event. If these things can start shipping next month, that’s when Apple will announce them.

Wouldn’t apple have announced the iMac, Apple TV and iPad in may this year if that was the case?

Apple don’t always announce stuff when they are ready to ship there was a whole month between the Spring event and actual shipping.

I didn’t mean they would literally start shipping the same day, but they’re not going to sit on them for five months just so they can have an in-person event in November, either. (The way Newsom operates, California might be back in lockdown by then, since it will be flu season again.)

For two weeks, you were convinced the new MBPs would be announced yesterday, and now you’re convinced they’re not coming out until November? Why? The underlying facts and rumors haven’t changed at all. Q3 has been the rumored ETA all year, and Q3 starts July 1 — and Apple has previously released MBPs in July.

One word ‘miniLED’ it looks as though Apple arnt releasing this MBP until miniLED is ready many sources are now claiming Q4 so I think that’s highly likely now.

Which sources? Better ones than those who whiffed on new MBPs being announced yesterday?

As far as I’ve seen, the people who were saying Q3 all year are still saying Q3.

In any event, I’m not trying to give you a hard time. I saw that you ordered an M1 right after the Keynote yesterday, after MBPs weren’t announced. Unless it’s an urgent need for work, I hope you’ve thought long and hard about that. You’re obviously very interested in the new MBPs, and whether they’re announced in July or October, it’s not all that much time to wait. You’re going to kick yourself if new MBPs are announced a week after your return window ends.

I figured from past experience of owning macs, they tend to hold value quite well, so if push comes to shove and I feel the new MBP is worth it over the M1 I will sell and put the extra to it.

Failing that I might wait until the entry level M2 iteration comes next year and see what that offers too.

From all of the reviews online it seems that the entry level macs are more than capable for the vast majority of users, so I will see how it goes for my use case, if I can get by fine on the entry MBP I have likely saved myself about $700 (£600)… if not I will probably loose a couple of hundred on the value of the entry MBP.

Yeah I have took a risk I know but if nothing is announced next month, then it’s another 5-6 month wait before the product is in my hands… and that’s if there is no further delays due to the chip shortage/further covid restrictions coming into play.

This is the view I have taken. I am just about to order a Macbook Air M1.

Unless the new pros totally destroy the current M1 line up performance wise, there will be a resale market for the current generation models.

I've accepted I might lose a couple of hundred if they do decide to release the new stock and I fell compelled to sell / upgrade.

This scenario will always be an issue in tech. It will be M1x vs M2 release date next !

As other have said, "enjoy the products".

Yeah 100%, because I can guarantee, within weeks of the M1X MBP launch we will see an article:

‘Gurman hints at next MBP refresh coming in Q3 2023 with improved XDR display which has reportedly reduced blooming by implementing XYZ, an all new powerful M2X SoC and a Face ID camera which users have been requesting for many years’

Personally I think Apple are going to market and price these new MBP’s for the absolutely true professional, considering the performance gains currently with the M1 chip, the current base MBP and MBA are equivalent of machines nearly double their price and are basically Apples old vision of what pro was.

Apples new vision of Pro machines is probably going to be specs which are extremely overboard and prices to match, I wouldn’t be surprised with these machines being $1999 and $2499 respectively.

Your going overboard thinking the next AS MBP is only for the professionals. If they cost $2399/$2799 that wouldn't be surprising. Macs have always been expensive, specially well configured. Even a well configured iMac right now can be upwards towards $3800. Those new 24" 16GB/1TB run $2099 and theirs not much to them. ;)

Also there is no more iMac Pro, so it would be likely just a 30" or 32" iMac.

I think it will be announced in October and will ship shortly after
