I know Apple generally don't stock BTO machines however does anyone know if they usually have hi res base model MacBook's in store?

I'll be in the US later this year and will be looking at a MBP hi res through one of the Apple Stores in NYC.

From my experience at the Apple store in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, Japan, is that they do stock some BTO models.

When I went to pick up my MBP, I could have bought the Anti-Glare Hi-Res option with the base 15". I opted for the high-end 15" though.

But yeah, most stores around here have BTO models. Heck, they had like four or five different configs of the MacBook Air!

North Michigan Ave (Chicago) stocks the hi-res anti-glare model but only the high-end with the 2.3 proc upgrade.

All of the apple stores I've been to in the US have had the three configurations:

    15" 2.0 normal screen
    15" 2.2 normal screen
    15" 2.3 hi-res antiglare

I would assume NYC would be the same

This is what they have here in Portland, ME as well. Somewhat surprising, it doesn't seem like the processor upgrade is worth nearly as much as it costs. Do they sell that many 2.3s?

    Its the same worldwide.

Every model they potentially have in stock in the store is actually displayed on the price blocks. They have the entry level, medium level, and bells and whistles versions (aka the Dogs Bollocks I guess...).

Each of the three configurations are the same every-time everywhere. You cant expect for example a 2.3 with glossy or any other such variations like a smaller processor with a bigger drive.

They have those 3 model types available as standard cofigurations. Anything else is BTO and never in stock. So that means you can get the hi res but you have no choice other than to go with max 2.3 and the washed-out depression-causing layer of anti glare because its considered the tricked-out maxed out version. Either that one or BTO.
