I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before this happens and I can see pros and cons to it. Haptic feedback is key (no pun intended) and they seem to be getting better and better at using it in their operating systems.

Long term I’m sure we’ll see something with this sort of keyboard - maybe it will be an updated magic keyboard at some point - a stand-alone Bluetooth keyboard which has a slab of glass like someone has cut off the bottom half of an iPad Pro 12.9 screen, but with haptic feedback - the ability to redesign the keyboard for different apps (like the touchbar) could be petty cool.

Or maybe the haptic feedback will come to a future iteration of the iPad Pro first. Who knows what it could be like, but its not the worst idea I’ve heard and bear in mind there’s going to be a whole generation of people who’ve been brought up typing on virtual keyboards as their primary method of input.

@ascender

All great points and very valid I think.
I look forward to typing about that, here on the forum, from my Thinkpad or Mac with an external "real" keyboard.

:)

Fair enough, but most of us prefer to live in the current decade.

There are advantages to not having a smartphone but you make it sound like a negative. I only got an iPhone about 18 months ago and before that I was perfectly fine without it. Like Fishrrman my phone is off most of the time or on airplane mode so people can't interrupt my day. Phones are tools for us to control but for most the phones control their owners.
