Friend is trying to install 10.8 ML, but close to end of process it stops.

He initially wiped the drive and installed clean. After giving it a few HOURS to install with no success, the wiped it and tried again, still no success.

What could be causing this?

Also have a 2007 MBP (17"). Installed 256Gb Crucial M4 SSD and increased RAM to 6Gb (4Gb and 2Gb sticks). Then, upgraded to Mountain Lion through Snow Leopard and Lion. Then, bootcamped Win7 64 bit.

All said and done, the MBP seemed a bit sluggish in Windows and did not get AutoCad to work well on a 17" screen, but didn't have the proper keyboard and mouse either.

Long story - short. Bought another Crucial SSD and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, where I can use the old PC S/W. Using AutoCad elsewhere and have the other SSD as backup.

Snow Leopard does all I need, but then again, I'm an old goat and don't need the bells and whistles.

Love the 1920x1200 on a 17" screen. Looked at the new rMBP, but it's not that much better.

Tell your friend that maxing the RAM and adding SSD will do wonders.
