I think its possible the LED screens could have been even brighter [I looked at the 15" LED and 17" screen side by side yesterday, it is a noticeable difference and major improvment over the old 15"] but Apple did not want to "show up" its flagship model. This also accounts for their DL attitude towards the LED.

:)

Dear GOD, if you want the screen ANY brighter it would only be to burn your eyeballs out! Mine is constantly on 3/4 or less in darker situations. Its actually significantly brighter than my 20" LCD Monitor. Speaking of, are there any LED backlit external monitors out there yet?

I for one applaud Apple for not taking the cheap route on this upgrade. They definitely lost a profit margin on this one and I appreciate it.

Both the 15" LED and 17" I saw were both brand new SR models. :)

I thought you were comparing the old MBP and new 15" MBP, in which case it's not quite a fair comparison since the old MBPs lose their brightness over time. The newer ones also appear brighter because they are evenly illuminated corner to corner, top to bottom.

I've had both and they're not comparable in quality! The LED-lit is in a different class altogether.I just feel bad for all the people who have to fight for better replacement displays for their old MBPs - they deserve better and should fight for that.

... So I'll wear sunglasses. :D

Apologies if I sounded like I was complaining, I am most certainly not. The LED display is fantastic! If the LED were bright to the point it would put the 17" CCFL to shame don't you think Apple [or any company] would have muzzled it to keep their other notebooks looking on-par? :apple:

Agreed. :)

Right. and it's for this reason I'm waiting once more for the 17" 1920 x 1200 option to be LED as well with Leopard on board. I want to vote for longer battery life and greener tech by waiting once more. Can't be too much longer beyond October can it? What's the status of the manufacturing ramp up to bigger higher resolution LED screens?

The average time between updates is 186 days. You do the math if that means October (its more like January)

faaackkkk....iii waant a 17, but i have 2 have a dam led now that i know of them...wish i didnt even know!!!

say i get a 17" now, how much would it be to switch it for an LED when they come out on D-day? if in fact that could be done?

That's a tough call. I've not seen any portable LED displays above 15.4" anywhere (desktop LED backlighting is quite different), and the smaller ~12" version's been around for 18 months or so. (I think that's when the very first Sony Vaios showed up with it in Japan.)

Of course, The MBP is the first 15.4" on the market with this tech, though both HP and Dell have models planned, and

So, maybe not this year. Then again, they could surprise me :)

You would have to sell your current model, and make up the difference yourself. I don't see the MBP getting another update till next year.

yes but couldn't the release of leopard be reason to make an exception to that trend? ...perhaps a leopard special edition MBP!!!!! whooaa wee:eek: :apple: :D :)

Do you kind folks believe it probable that when Apple does indeed upgrade the 17" displays, they will upgrade the rest of the machine as well (possibly even the redesign of the case), or just minor upgrades to the harddrive, etc. ?? ........i hope they do this at least by the same time as leapard..

I seriously doubt 17" models will be updated by Leopard. There's a good chance it won't happen this year. And I think it could be independent of any major overhauls in case design, as the 15" one is. Although hopefully they will update the case sooner or later (USER REPLACEABLE HARD DRIVES.)

Well sure. It could be. Everything could be. I am just saying that the probability is not that high. The last update cycle was very long. Maybe the next one is shorter. Who knows.

I figure the next update of the MBP will be when Penryn becomes available.

A MacBook update later in the year, probably by adding LED backlighting and Santa Rosa. By then, the SR platform will likely have received further price-cuts.

I don't see that as impinging on the MBP too much, since SR isn't something most consumers know about anyway, and despite the X3100 (which might even have half-decent drivers by then...), the MBP will still have a much, much better GPU, a bigger display, express card slot, etc.

I won't speak to the difference in brightness between LED and CCFL screen but I think there is a clear difference between uniformity. I just saw the 17" 1920x1200 matte screens in the 5th Avenue Apple Store in NYC and it is noticeably less uniformly lit than the the 15" LED screens. It's not a perfect apple-to-apple - no pun intended - comparison but at least age is eliminated as a factor since both screen are absolutely new.
