I have a MBP M1 that has been a champ, no issues since I got it in 2021, but now the battery seems be starting to run out way faster literally overnight and it has also started to get hot during simple minimal use (think just safari and pages running a few tabs).

Has this happened to anyone else?

It's only been an issue since that last OS update, so I'm starting to suspect forced obsolescence, tbh... 👀

I'm starting to suspect the battery is dying. Batteries are wear items with a finite lifespan.

It's either that or you've got something running all the time which is making the computer consume lots more power, and thus running the battery down and making the computer warm. (Or both things at the same time.)

You can use System Information.app -> Hardware -> Power to investigate battery health. Under Battery Information there should be something like this:

Health Information:
Cycle Count: 123
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 100%

If you see anything other than "Normal" battery condition", or an extremely high cycle count (Apple rates their batteries for ~1000 cycles iirc), or a maximum capacity of 75% or less, you probably need to get a new battery.

Otherwise, as @FreakinEurekan suggested, use Activity Monitor to investigate whether there's something eating lots of CPU all the time.
