I've been going through the MBP 16" screen lottery, trying to get a decent one with even color, good white balance, and less noticeable luminosity shifting. I've purchased a few now, and three out of four have had what appears to be damage to either the edge of the display panel itself or the screen coating at the edge - probably during assembly when the panel was installed into the case. It appears like the edge of the display panel where it meets the case is jagged in certain areas, and these areas reflect back when light hits them. It's in basically the same place on all three, although it is worse on two of them. One of them is fine, and doesn't show the damage (but has a really uneven, ugly green-tinted panel). It seems like there was a manufacturing issue with these, as all of my other MacBooks have always had perfectly even edges. Of course, the best display panel is the one with the worst jagged edge.

Has anyone with a new M4 MacBook Pro noticed this damage on theirs? It must be somewhat widespread on these early manufactured ones if 3-4 have it. I've tried to capture it with photos, but its difficult. It's noticeable in normal room lighting though, and will reflect back under bright lighting. You don't have to go looking for it once you know it's there.

Would you keep a MacBook Pro with this issue, if the screen was otherwise decent - or return it?

I've had bad screen coating peeling issues on previous MBPs. My main concern is that the screen coating is damaged in these areas (where it looks like the reflection comes down below the even top edge of the pattern in the photos), and that this is going to continue peeling when its wiped (gently) to remove dust or clean the screen. My experience is once a peel starts, it only gets worse.

I would swap it out asap. That's just Apples poor quality control. Thankfully I don't have this issue on mine.

I had a mark on the left side of the screen on my M4 MBP. I thought it was a crumb or something. When I took a pic and magnified in, it looked like a chip and I could see the edge of the glass.

Took it to Apple and they replaced the whole lid.

Looks like I have a similar problem on the left side of the screen of my new M4 Pro 14“ Did you get yours exchanged or is this within specs?

That’s awful. Mine was in the return period so I returned it. They don’t bother with exchanges because it wasn’t a stock model (I upgraded memory) and they don’t have any stock of those. I just have to keep re-ordering, waiting, and hoping to get a decent one.

I would certainly hope Apple would replace that. If not, return it if you can. I would never keep that. Apple’s quality control seems non-existent now. These things are too expensive for that.

Maybe they should swap the screen since isn’t a stock model either.

I’d probably keep such a unit. No impact on performance or usability.

I don’t get it. Why would someone want to keep an expensive product with obvious manufacturing defects? Especially when Apple will replace it, because they regard it as a defective product too? It may just look ugly now, but if the defect causes the screen coating to peel off or make it more susceptible to other display issues, it will absolutely affect usability. Why would you want to take that chance when you don’t have to?

Superrenz, I’m glad to hear Apple replaced it for you!

Me too! At first the store manager only wanted to replace the screen, since I am beyond my return period, but the guy at the Genius Bar could change her mind and they swapped it. 👍
