Hi all

Keen to replace the SSD in my MBP Mid-2012 15" Retina (A1398) to a 500GB SSD.

I have seen this adaptor:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/B-Key-M-2-NGFF-SSD-to-2012-MacBook-Pro-A1398-A1425-Adapter-Converter-4-Length/322460870143?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

I want to buy the Samsung EVO m.2 850:
https://www.samsung.com/us/computin...ate-drives/ssd-850-evo-m-2-500gb-mz-n5e500bw/

Has anyone used these adaptors before and found they work ok? Im worried about the dimensions of them all to make sure they all fit. Would love some advice if so....

Also have read here and there re: sleep issues when replacing the SSD?

Thanks!

Seems like there's a long thread elsewhere here dedicated to such replacements:
Upgrading 2013/2014 Macbook Pro SSD to M.2 NVMe

Might be worth looking into.

That thread is for the PCIe SSD's - the 2012 Retina MBP used a proprietary SATA adapter.

You should look for reviews from users to see if there are issues with how a specific adapter fits. If you can't find a review or other confirmation (outside of what the seller says), I would look elsewhere as there are multiple adapters that do seem to fit (and there are some that don't). When people have asked about which adapter to use on this forum, I haven't seen people responding but obviously if you search on this forum, you might be able to find something.

The sleep issue seems to affect the PCIe adapter - I don't see anything in the review for the various SATA adapters that say there are sleep issues.

Thanks. Yes I did see that monster thread but it’s definitely a different connection.

I’ll take one for the team and let everyone know how I go with m.2 ssd.

I bought an mSATA adapter and it worked fine. I would be careful these days as mSATA drives are hard to find.

The point about mSATA SSD's is a good one - be aware if what you buy is current or discontinued. Yes, there is less choice now but Samsung, Crucial and WD all currently sell mSATA SSD's (the 850 Evo is current) so there are quality choices out there, although a specific brand may not be available from your favorite store.

Thanks however ive found as you have mentioend, that m.2 ssd drives are easier to find. That ebay link i provided does say it can handle 80mm m.2 SSD - so assume its fine? I will try it out!

Decided against the m.2 adaptor as everyone I found (except that ebay item) says 2280 form factor doesn't work with it.

Safer to go mSATA which I've now done. Thanks everyone!
