When not in use, my 2020 MBP sits on top of a Hsu VTF-3 MK5 HP 600 Watt subwoofer. Is there any potential problem with this? I know nothing about the effect of electromagnetism on computers if any.

Subwoofers -- like all modern speakers -- are electromagnetically shielded.

I would be more concerned about vibrations from the subwoofer eventually damaging the more delicate components in the notebook computer: Apple's notoriously poor keyboard switches, solder connections, camera lens elements, stuff like that.

I would personally find a better storage place for a $1500-2000 computer or at least put it in a sleeve (neoprene rubber, thick felt, etc.) that would dampen the vibration.

But that's just me...

Also this subwoofer is desperately pleading for someone to put a beverage on it. You know how well electronics and liquids work together.

You're already putting books on it, it's clear you're treating it as a coffee table.

"Let me put this glass of soda in this tall hi-ball glass with its high center of gravity right next to this expensive computer. I'm sure I won't knock over the drink. It has never happened to me before. I'm careful, you know."

Not going to happen- liquids get nowhere near my electronics. The books aren't bothering anything and they stay put. I had a pair of reading glasses on top of the MBP that vibrated off to the floor while watching the movie "Greyhound" on Apple TV+. But I agree with you guys and will find a new home for her.
