How does the GPU compare between the MBP 17" and imac i7?

Any other changes in the MBP that makes it a better choice?

4850 in the iMac is many times more powerful than the MBP. MBP is just a bit more powerful than iPad at this point, so if you need muscle I'm afraid an Apple laptop won't cut it.

Obviously the iMac is not portable. I somehow doubt that graphics is the sole decider.

Portability, price, screen size - all seem to be important factors.
