I just got a 27" iMac...and I want to play with it more than I do with my MBP. lol...The screen on the iMac will definitely help with photography/editing. But with the 15" HR MBP and an external display, you'll get the best of both worlds.

Edit: Noticed talmy's post. Seriously, you have a pretty recent and should be still in near perfect (if you treat it right) condition laptop and a new iPad. Portability down. Would be fiscally irresponsible to buy a MBP.
Not long back I bought the top-of-the-line 15 inch MBP to replace my old mid-2009 13-inch MBP, but I found the native resolution was just terrible to look at.
It then dawned on me that I could have bought a 27-inch 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 2GB VRAM 2TB HD iMac for less! I duly took the MBP back to the store and to my surprise and delight they agreed to a swap.
I am sooo glad I did! The iMac is just fantastic. I was even able to fit the RAM that I'd bought ready for the 15-inch MBP. And I still have the old MBP for portable use.
If you have the room, get the 27". Although it would be hard to choose between the 21.5" + a second monitor versus the 27" alone. (I've got the 27" + a 20" and used to have the 20" iMac next to a 20". I've been dual monitor home and work for over 5 years now).
