This reminds me of the 15" powerbooks vs. 17"powerbooks.. where there were vertical line/heat/inverter issues on the 15" screens and no problems with the 17".

Maybe the quality care people at Apple take more time to inspect the 17" because more money's going towards them than the 15"

May have something to do with heat. Back in powerbook days I went to apple stores several times and checked the bottoms of 12" vs 15" vs 17" to see how warm they got.
I remember that 12" was always noticeably warmer than 15" and 15" warmer than 17". It kind of makes sense since larger laptops have larger surface to distribute the heat. And we all know that heat is enemy of electronics so it should not be surprising that 17" may have advantage in the area of stability of components as related to temperature. Also, maybe there is more space between internal components in larger laptops which probably further helps 17".

Bursting the bubble...

I have the new 17" Penryn w/ HD Glossy... First there was the creaky hinge, then the popping noise in the left speaker just before any sound. I was able to deal with it and wait for a vacation to put it in to apple for repairs. Next the track pad button was sticking and made a clunking noise when it gave. That started to make me think about putting it in the next Monday. Before I had a chance to ponder that, I had an error message that my mail index was corrupt and to restart mail. The forever beachball, manual power down, and nothing but beeping.

Apple Care is now sending me a brand new unit. So for this 17" owner I am on number 2.

ee gads, no! the the creaky hinge!!!

I have both 15" and 17" high res and both have had problems. I swap my macs every 6 months or so. There is always problems if you look for them. Also like others have said this place is going to be full of people with complaints. It is the nature of a forum. but there are more good ones you do not hear off.

I don't believe in problems, therefore I have none. now how to spend the money saved by not buying apple care :D:apple::eek::eek:

Get a grip

Maybe you didn't read the whole post, or just want to be a tool and take a post out of context. Get a grip indeed.

FWIW the creaky hinge seemed to be a over-torque thing. The lid when closed, which seemed to pop open at the slightest touch, make the top flex where both endes were up in the air another 1/8" to 1/4" inch, more than the center.
