Factory worker are getting paid $0.5 per hour while apple makes 150% margin on each of the product it sells. Too bad for the workers and fair for the share holders right...

Current price levels are what they are because the only western economy that's currently being more mismanaged than the U.S. economy is the Eurozone. People are ignoring exchange rates again.

I live in Europe, so the prices are more expensive than ever! I think that apple is getting away from the computer business, so they keep the marge as high as possible. The price of the components is not what drive the sale value.
You live in Europe. There you go. If you don't live in the US, that's your bad luck I guess. Prices are also crazy here in Australia.

What sort of import controls and/or customs declarations do you have to make coming back to France? I have never paid much attention but different countries seem to have very different rules about what gets tagged with duties if you "self-import" goods purchased overseas.

Normally, your personal computer is considered a personal item. So no declaration needed.

I suspect you are mistaken and that you should instead be declaring and paying tax (currently 20%) on your imported Macs.

"Duty relief from which you can benefit
If you are arriving in France from a country that is not a member of the European Union, you can benefit from duty relief if you are travelling with the goods you have purchased, meaning you don’t have to declare them or pay any duties and taxes. In fact, you don’t have to declare your goods at all if their total value or quantity does not surpass the authorised allowances. However, the total market value of the goods should not exceed the following amounts:
travellers over the age of 15 years: 430 euros for air and sea transport
; 300 euros for all other transport;
travellers under the age of 15 years: 150 euros, regardless of the mode of transport.
All items of a value higher than the stated allowances must be declared and the value added tax (TVA) and customs duties usually applicable must be paid for by you.

"The global average import duty rate for Laptop computer is 2.5%, with a minimum of 0% and a maximum of 22.25%"

Apple computers are priced very competitively agains alternatives. A Dell XPS 15 costs $2549, a MBP 15" with comparable components (but faster everything) is $2499 The ASUS UX501 appears to be significantly cheaper with very good specs, but it doesn't appear to be in stores yet(?)

=/
But they used to be cheaper, My current 2011MBP, top of the line, cost me $2199. And come on, the storage upgrade pricing is ridiculous!
Apple should just use the standard M.2 socket.

One would imagine the prices will come down when consumers will no longer pay the going price, but that doesn't seem like it's happening anytime soon with Apple products.

Prices go up that is just inflation, add in the far better basic specs and more expensive components and apples price increases are nothing different to anyone else.

I will say its getting harder and harder to justify my spending over 2k for a laptop. They're great machines but they are only computers and with similarly configured PCs being cheaper you have to ask yourself what are you getting for the price.

I'm paying a premium price for a computer and so I expect a premium user experience. I'm not saying that as of now I'm not getting that, but I will say that I'm not willing to pay that premium for a haswell based machine. If Apple does upgrade to Skylake later this year I'll wait and see.

I've been thinking of getting a new computer in November/December of this year and an iMac or a MBP are on my short list.

I had plenty of problems with this 2011 radeon gate MBP. Now, after 2 logic boards is going strong, but I don't know if the price is justified. The QC is not that good anymore. The new Radeon 370x is a hot little piece of hardware, so I don't know if they will last in the long term, I wouldn't bet.
I also think that for this price levels, apple should make 3 year warranty standard.

Finally something we agree on, I also believe 3 years warranty should be standard.

I cannot comment on current computer QC, but my 2012 rMBP has been (so far) the best laptop I've owned.

I will say Apple's track record with dGPUs is downright awful and how they initially responded on those issues were not very customer focused.

I still stand by my assessment that I believe MBPs are good computers, whether they're worth the premium price at this point is very debatable.
