mbp recommendation

Any macbook will do. I voted 15" though. If you have the money for one, its an awesome machine and will certainly out pace any 13".

its just that the c2d is 4 years old. that chip was in the mbp 15 inch 4 years ago.

It seems that you've convinced yourself that you don't want them to get the 13", so just tell them to go for the 15" with i5 processor. Both will work fine for what they're doing, though.

the 13 has the advantage of being more portable and battery. it would be the perfect notebook with an i5. here is review:
