Everytime the battery runs out while using my MBP (I have a habit of ignoring the reserve battery warning) it switches off completely - doesn't hibernate or anything - and when I turn it on again it sets my date to "1st Jan 2001" and forgets my wifi password.

Does this happen to anyone else? Why doesn't it recover my work like other MBP's i've seen?

People have come here asking the same question over and over. You could find your answer with searching these forums or by reading through the Apple Notebook Battery FAQ.

Either way, you need to calibrate your battery, because your notebooks do not have enough power to go into hibernation when it thinks it does.
