I've been looking at getting a MacBook Pro to replace my Powerbook G4. I can still do just about everything on the G4, but it is slow and heavy, and the screen resolution is just not good enough for a lot of things now.

I really like the idea of the epic screen res on the Retina MBPs, but I also really want an optical drive so I can rip and burn CDs and watch DVDs and BluRays on the road. Did Apple make a model that had both? I'd rather avoid an external drive if possible. It's part of the reason I love my G4 still - can still watch DVDs on it just fine!

The retina MBP has never had an optical drive, the only current option is the non-retina 13" 2.5GHz MBP but it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

Apple (and many WinDoze computer manufacturers) are heading away from including optical drives. That's the reality.

You're only option is to purchase an external drive.

Or deal with an older computer. You can probably get one at a very good price that will be better than your powerbook.
