Can see the end of the Earth from here
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or OS issue, so I'll start here. This is the deal:

About 3-4 weeks ago I plugged my 15" MBP CD into an LCD projector that had a lower resolution than my screen. No problems there, everything worked fine. When I was done, I reset the display to the LCD, unplugged the projector, and that was it.

Ever since then, my MBP will start up (cold boot) and the screen will be at the resolution of the projector on an intermittent basis. This doesn't happen every time I start the MBP up cold, just every once in a while, maybe one time out of 3-5.

When it does occur, I open Displays in System Preferences, and there are two windows open - one for the LCD and one for the (former) projector, which is always the one on top. I click on the one for the LCD to bring it forward, click on "Detect Display" and it resets itself to the LCD and the proper (default) resolution.

Im wondering if I zap the PRAM or reset the PMU if this will stop. I'm open to any other suggestions.

Hi, A PRAM reset would certainly be the first thing to try.

After that a re-install with the archive and install method used would be next.

After that, and Apple Authorised Service Provider.

Maybe even try the AHT that shipped with the machine to see if it finds any issues.

Let us know how you get on.
