I have a 2011 MBP with a thunderbolt adapter to HDMI. I also have a 55" Samsung 3D LEDTV. I rented an iTunes movie (HD) and for some reason it only displayed in a square on my TV. (picture attached - sorry it's dark) any ideas why it's not going wider or full screen in a way?

Looks like you're mirroring the display. Either turn off mirroring or close your MBP's lid.
