Hi guys, I just bought a Macbook Pro, and would like to know what kind of connector I need to connect to my VGA external monitor. Also, after connecting, will I have the option of outputting the display to only the external monitor and not both?

You need a minidisplay port to vga connector. You can run your machine in clamshell mode so that the output only shows up on the external monitor.

Mini display port is smaller than mini dvi right? Mine is a mid 2010 model MBP

2010 is mini Displayport.
The mini-DVI is a lot older not much different in size but still a bit smaller and just different.
