Hi all, I have a new 2020 MBP 13" 10th gen and bought a cheap USB-C hub to have USB-A ports and HDMI output when traveling.

At home/work, I exclusively use older Dell U2412M monitors (16:10 goodness) and they have DVI/VGA/DisplayPort inputs. I have a DisplayPort to HDMI cable that I thought would connect the monitor to the MBP via the USB-C hub..seems logical. However, I've bought two USB-C hubs with HDMI out ports and neither one have worked with the monitor. When I connect to my TV via HDMI it works fine.

My guess would be there is something within the DisplayPort to HDMI cable that is causing the the USB-C hub/MBP to not recognize the monitor? Can someone confirm this? Could also be a bad cable but don't want to grab another one if there is something technically that won't let me do this.

Thanks for the help. With Apple's considerable DisplayPort history it's a bit ironic I'm having this issue.

The Dell U2412M is only 1920x1200.

What USB-C hub are you using?

DisplayPort to HDMI cables usually only work in one direction - from DisplayPort of computer to HDMI of display. What cable did you try? You need special adapters to connect HDMI of computer to DisplayPort of display.

In your case, if you don't want to replace the USB-C hub with one that has DisplayPort output, then you could try using a HDMI to DVI cable or adapter (HDMI and DVI are basically the same so such cables and adapters are bidirectional).

The only case where HDMI is different than DVI is for displays with resolutions like 2560x1440 which require DVI Dual Link instead of DVI Single Link.

I've bought an Anker one and a HooToo one (real quality right there :))

And yes, it is only 1920x1200 so nothing crazy for the cable to do as far as bandwidth. I will try to look at HDMI computer to DisplayPort display, and if that fails just got the DVI route which I was thinking of doing anyway.

Thanks for the help.

Nothing wrong with either of those options.

First choice should be HDMI to DVI adapter or cable.
Second choice is USB-C to DisplayPort cable (connect to a USB-C port of the MBP)
Third choice is USB-C dock having DisplayPort with DisplayPort cable.
Last choice is HDMI to DisplayPort adapter with DisplayPort cable.
