Its not some secret feature I’m unaware of?
Any key turns my MacBook Pro on from full shut off, happens all the time - any key

Went through the standard apple tech resets to test things and eventually showed them a sequence of keys F, U, and C key all started it up. Any key will power it on.

They have me booked in for repair or replacement. It’s not normal huh?

It has been a thing since 2016... I am really not sure why the tech booked you for a repair for a laptop that works exactly as its supposed to work.

It is normal. It's even documented by Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201150
Additionally, MacBook Pro (2018) and MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) turn on when you press any key on the keyboard or press the trackpad.

Yes, that's the intended behavior for 2018 models. I'm personally not a fan of this new "feature" at all (I'd like an option to keep it completely switched off when cleaning it or travelling), but it's normal.

Thanks so much for the Info, can’t believe they had me book appointment.
I dont like this feature either, would be nice to give us the option.

I was trying to do an smc reset and every time I hit shift it turned on. Do you need to press Shift option Ctrl and power all at exact same time and hold them?

Also can I ask the apple site said right shift key, the apple tech chat said left, does this matter?

There's a command in Terminal you can run to turn it off. The below was found through Google.

Disabling boot on power/lid open on late-2016 MacBook Pro
1) Go to /Applications/Utilities/ folder and open the Terminal app.

2) To disable boot on power and boot on lid, paste or type the following line in the Terminal window, then press Enter to execute the command:

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

The change will be permanent until you reset your Mac’s NVRAM.

To switch back to the default auto-boot behavior when you plug the MacBook Pro in or lift its lid, simply reverse the change with the following Terminal command:

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

In both instances, you may be asked to enter your administrative password.

Keep in mind that turning boot on power and boot on lid off shall re-enable the classic Mac startup chime, too. The command won’t enable the new auto-boot feature on the twelve-inch MacBook or other Mac models such as the MacBook Air.

A really curious decision, surely that’s the point of leaving the computer on but closing the lid to sleep it... if you’re shutting it down it probably means you don’t want it to come back on until you deliberately press the power button again.
