MBP won't recognize external hd anymore

I have a nextar GPS with a 40 gigabyte harddrive. I use to be able to simply connect it by usb and it would show in the finder. Now it won't. It shows in the system profiler but not in the finder. I can't access it. Maybe since I did my last software update about 6 weeks ago? I think it might be because the usb is hi speed on the Mac but not on the gps. The gps works fine with my PC. Can anyone help? Thanks

Is the external hard drive recognized under Disk Utility? I know in the past I had accidently dragged the hard drive icon off the finder window and *poof* it disappeared. The hard drive was fine but the icon disappeared.

No, it does not show under disk utility, all that shows is FUJITSU and Macintosh HD. Thanks
