MBR grayed out

I want to format a Seagate 3 TB drive I purchased as an exFAT drive so that I can use it to play media files on a television. I need it to be done with MBR. Unfortunately, MBR option is grayed out and I can't choose it. I don't understand why. I am running 10.6.8

I believe there's a partition size limit, 2GB comes to mind but can't find a reference offhand.

2GB is the limit for FAT32. For exFAT the limit is 64 ZiB, which is... 6.4×10^10 TB (terabytes).

This. MBR doesn't support disks > 2048GB.
