Bye Bye CurrentC, it wasn't even nice knowing you, because for now, you're still vaporware!

Why would I now want to pull out my phone to scan a QR code, or much less wallet, when I can just pass my watch over a credit card terminal, and walk away receipt in hand? I have used Apple Pay on my Apple Watch at numerous places, and trust me, it is a godsend, carrying stuff in your hands, not having to reach in your pocket at all!

Walmart may just give up on MCX, and switch on their NFC readers, with all the major retailers on board with NFC, this WILL be a standard method of payment in the US. (Sorry Canada, and other countries that don't have Apple Pay yet :(, but at least your cards have PayPass, which mine do too, and I am from Arizona, but I never used it because the card was already out anyway, blah blah blah blah).- And lets not forget, the cards had them but the readers were never there, now we finally have the readers.

All in all, this is just the nice side effect of us also getting Chip & PIN, which the new terminals have NFC built in already.

Once this happens, Apple Pay will be accepted at more than 1million+ stores!

I'm happy about this news, also because Apple Pay is good for the consumer, while CurrentC is not. But your posts are full of inaccuracies.

First of all, Chip & PIN readers do not automatically include NFC. That has to be purchased. It's a relatively cheap upgrade, and it given Apple Pay's popularity and security features it doesn't make sense for a merchant to not buy it while they're upgrading their terminal for Chip & PIN, which they'll need to do this year anyway. But it is not automatically included.

Second, not sure where you get the idea that WalMart accepting Apple Pay would increase the number of stores accepting it to more than 1 million. WalMart only has about 12,000 stores.

LOL at Best Buy. Those idiots turned off their NFC compatible readers years ago when Google Wallet first came out. Made me wonder why they ever bothered to upgrade their POS readers.

Now that Apple Pay is out and consumers are using it, Best Buy finally wakes up and realizes that maybe they should cater to their consumers more. Never understoof their rationale for taking away a payment method to begin with. sheer stupidity I guess. Regardless, another stake in the heart of CurrentC and I'm glad.

Next domino to fall will be Target. They already have everything ready for Apple pay, both online and in store. They just have to activate the POS readers.

Wal-Mart will be the last, but no surprise there.

The question will be whether Sears/Kmart will survive long enough to turn on their card readers.

----------

I'm of the opinion that when CurrentC launches, it will be revamped to offer NFC comparability in addition to the clumsy original QR code approach.

Regardless of how it works, it can't shake the stink of letting a Walmart sponsored system take money directly from your bank account and you giving up your current credit card protections as you do so.

I think this is the main issue. I don't think they care about the consumer as long as they can save on credit card fees.

Was just about the say the same thing. If I remembered it correctly it was more of a scheme to benefit the merchant.

Went in today!

Best Buy (prior to my reading this article) said in 2 weeks - 1 month they are getting new payment terminals! :p MCX is beginning to cripple!

----------

Now for Kroger / Target / Dicks then I'm set. :p

I like Best Buy.

The thing about Best Buy is that they get to see the sale of Apple gear. Everyday. They know the power of the Apple ecosystem. It was only a matter of time before they opened up. This isn't a victory for Apple Pay though. This is a victory for NFC period. None of it should be limited.

Pretty much all but the really really cheap all-in-one readers that don't need a POS do, but like you said the price differential is small enough that it's not worth skimping on that.

I had a feeling was gonna do this. Hell I, like some others, called this when BB first swore off Apple Pay. Probably why we got new POS systems too hehe. Only thing that sucks is the annoying customer who will try to buy some piece of candy or something just to use apple pay on their shiny new iPhone b/c they wanna look cool. Then if that particular register doesn't doesn't recognize his/her apple pay debit or credit card or whatever...then said customer will get mad and get an attitude and waste 30mins complaining, when they could have just taken out some cash or the actual debit card to pay for the product and been on their way back home. Actually saw a situation similar to that happen at another store. Pretty sad tbh.

yes and it would be even better if they rolled it out outside the US. I estimate I've burned an extra 1.2 calories carrying the less-than-useful NFC chip around for 6 months.

Thats what I've heard too, summer 2015 not fall 2015. Tthey will be getting an entire new pos system and brand new terminals with NFC. :D

1. MCX needs to burn and 2. Whoever has the authority needs to find a way to ensure that merchants with NFC terminals are accepting these payments. I am so sick of seeing the 'Tap to Pay" icon then after standing there like a fool for a good 30 seconds, the cashier says "yeah, those don't do anything." I don't even bother trying to use Apple Pay anymore unless it's a merchant I know accepts it.

We already got the new POS system in my best buy store. I have a love/hate relationship with it so far lol

BB is in a slightly different situation than other MCX members. BB is basically an overpriced showroom for online retailers like Amazon, and has been reduced to sub-leasing floor space to manufacturers to reduce overhead costs. Apple may have put the screws to BB by threatening to pull displays/leased space from stores if they didn't accept ApplePay. BB accepting ApplePay is a sign of desperation in an attempt to stop the bleeding of customers to other BnM (some are also MCX members) and online retailers. BB will likely go the way of Circuit City and soon to be bankrupt Radio Shack.

Might be a bit out of touch with the current pricing between the two companies. Sure Amazon has things cheaper, but Best Buy matches them and still gives you reward points earned. I've found more than a few items recently that were cheaper at Best Buy than on Amazon. Amazon adjusts the prices down on the popular hits while less common things are not priced as competitively, so do your homework before you shop and come out on top.

I think 480 but it's been a while so I'm not 100% sure.

I hope its those, they look a lot nicer. My Best Buy still uses the Hypercom L4150 terminals with NFC disabled. -__- I know that WaWa gas station uses these, is there anyway someone can get a video of them using Apple Pay inside at WaWa? Thanks.

Get a picture! Is NFC active yet? Are they using Hypercom/Equinox terminals? (Same as the Walgreens ones)

They are using Ingenico, I hope someone gets a picture too because here they are still using the ugly beige IBM machines, with the ugly Motorola/Hypercom/Ugly Terminals. Yes they are really ugly. Yes I judge because for the whole country's sake, I want things to look good. I probably don't even make sense right now. :apple::apple:

Really? I actually like the current ones better than any other terminal I have seen. The round look is unique and cool.

I feel like we're overcompensating in that regard. Most places seem to be spending the absolute most possible money on these things (e.g. the full glass touchscreen Verifone terminals instead of the smaller non-touchscreen ones). Which is good as a Verifone shareholder but not so good for the smaller businesses who feel like they need to "keep up".

OTOH the non-touchscreen ones would likely mean a return to signing paper receipts since we're a chip and signature country, so that might actually be more expensive than having something that can capture a signature digitally.

Part of it is because it never works properly 90% of the time. The external PIN pad they added has never worked from day one, etc. also looks pretty dated.

The Ingenicos will fare much better.

Stores will not like the idea of going back to paper, hence the touch screens. Also they use the terminals for everything from credit applications to a call button for service (Walmart Site to Store counter does just this) so it does make sense.

I went to a small grocery store in the middle of no where (town of 2000) and it had Apple Pay. It was actually the first time I used it as my city doesn't have many stores with it yet. It was the biggest surprise of the year.

Pretty dumb to sign an exclusivity agreement, especially with the rumors of Apple Pay for so long and Google Wallet beginning to take off. It's like the guys who make the decisions at these companies really have no idea what their customers want: security, privacy and speedy transactions.
