Fans are a crap shoot, I'm trying to help my roommate find a better fan system for his PC. It was the heat source for our apartment for the end of fall/beginning of winter, and we live in Wisconsin!

He's got a tiny little fan blowing in from the side, and a tiny little fan mounted on the top of the processor, but claims the 5 fans in his power supply will cool the PC. Nope. He shouldn't argue with me, I am a computer hardware technician.

Look for the maximum air displacement and the minimum decibel level.

No more experiment for this computer...
This is the SOLUTION.... 3 new fans from Papst..

2x Papst Fan 60x60x25 Mod. 73594 In the power supply..
1x Papst Fan 119x119x25 Mod. 73488

Afther this mod, you can hear only the noise of the hard drive.. :)

I've been toying with quieting down my Digital Audio for some time now, but I always sprung for increased-performance upgrades.

Now that I've pretty much reached the limit of what I'm willing to do to it, I think I may swap out the PSU fan for a quieter model.

Still my DA on a bad day isn't as loud as those MDDs!

I've been considering the same changes as you. I figured out that the DA has the 120mm side fan, an 80mm power supply fan, and a 60mm CPU fan (for the dual CPU version I believe). However, I'm not sure what the CFM or dB ratings of those stock fans are, so I was unsure about potential silent replacements. I don't want to put a drastically reduced CFM fan in that will allow the system to get extremely hot, especially the 120mm that cools my 3 hard drives.

Blackadder, do you know what some of those ratings are on the stock fans?

These fans look great

My question is replacing the 2 small fans in the power supply on my G4 MDD 867 dual. The thing is these fans turn at 6800 rpm. It seems to me this would be necessary to cool it down. Am I right about this ?

Thanks
