mds and mdsworker hogging my system - help needed

[PDE]

I installed a new hard drive on my MBP the other day and used migration assistant to transfer from my old drive. Spotlight started indexing and eventually finished, at least I thought it had since I could access the spotlight menu.

For the past two days, however, mds and mdsworker have been hogging my CPU, often taking as much as 90% as shown in the activity monitor. Does this mean that spotlight is still indexing or are these processes somehow stuck? and if they're stuck, how can I fix that? I've rebooted, reset the pram, reset permissions, reset spotlight and even re-imported my files and it just continues and the fan is on a lot despite no activity.

I just opened the console but couldn't find anything related to mds.

Any suggestions....I don't want to just turn off spotlight since I use it all the time.

There seem to be several similar threads over in Apple Discussions, all of which are marked 'unanswered'.

Is "AE79-4216-9412-55372B58AC1B" a file or a folder? Either way, one option might be to move that particular "AE79-4216-9412-55372B58AC1B" item to your desktop (or perhaps the trash), then launch Address Book to verify all looks normal... and see if maybe something new gets created inside the Sources folder. (idunno really).

If that fixes things, then "AE79-4216-9412-55372B58AC1B" could eventually be erased (better wait a few days). If it borks Address Book immediately, then put it back.

Try disabling spotlight, and then reenabling it again. This should force it to reindex your computer, which will probably fix it. One way to do this is to just add your system volume to Spotlight’s Privacy list, and then remove it. I also believe there are more “thorough” ways to disable/reset spotlight, including disabling the service, and manually deleting the index. Googling “disable Spotlight” should help.

Thanks. I put the whole Library/Application Support/AddressBook in the privacy section of spotlight, checked addressbook and then deleted those numbered folders (which were empty). Then I reset spotlight by putting my main drive under private and letting the re-indexing process start and finish.


Unfortunately, it didn't help.I'm going to have to disable spotlight to get through my flight later today, and then I'll try manually deleting the spotlight index too.

This is really frustrating and the first time I've had a OS problem in years that I haven't been able to find a solution for.

I did an archive and install, but because it's snow leopard it doesn't actually seem to clean out the system. It merely installs on top of the old system. So that obviously didn't work. I tried using Onyx to delete the spotlight index and I also removed it manually, but that didn't work either.

The fans are going and battery life is awful because mds and mdworker are constantly hogging system resources. Can anybody help me with this console information? I don't understand this but it seems like MDS crashed this evening while indexing...

Need to boot from a system DVD and repair the disk with Disk Utility (or via fsck -fy in single-user mode) first, to eliminate directory/catalog problems as being the potential cause of all this.

Well, then chances are some file is corrupt (or maybe a wonky 3rd-party .mdimporter bundle?).

If i were to buy a new HD however, i'd opt to install a clean OS on it and then use Migration Assistant to import all user accounts only (at the very first boot, when no accounts exist as yet). Not as "convenient" perhaps, but (apparently) less prone to issues.

[yes, software updates will need to be run... and some apps will need to be re-installed, though perhaps they too could be included in the initial migration.]

since I'm traveling, I've just turned off spotlight and am using quicksilver for now. Annoying, but QS is pretty good and will be fine until I have the time to try to fix this again..

is there a solution for this? i am basically having the exact same problem with a server in our business. cannot afford to have downtime rebooting, reinstalling the OS etc.

have reindexed the system many times (about 10 times all up), and this does not resolve. the drives spotlight index files have been completely erased.

I've encountered this problem before.

I had to open activity monitor and see which files the process currently has opened and go through them all to find the corrupted culprit.
