Measuring stairs climbed?

Can the new Apple Watch measure stairs climbed without having the iPhone with you? I know that the previous generation didn't.

One of my favorite features of my Fitbit. Apple wants the AW to be a Fitness device but they are so far behind the competition it's not even funny. At least they did add built in GPS which only 1 Fitbit can do.
