Im, looking to make a mac mini (2012) a media server for my house. In the past I used Playback but thats been discontinued for a few years now. Recently I have been using the Synology 214 play and I am very disappointed. The transcoding is horrible and the reliability of it staying online for dlna is questionable (half the time my devices see it but don't read whats on it) I am looking for a program to serve video, pictures and audio to multiple devices (mac pro, iMac, apple tv, roku, xbox...) but I don't want it to go thru http (i.e. plex). Any suggestions would be welcome.

Current set up:
Sinology into gigabit rosewil switch, into asus ac68u.

Old set up: 08 Mac Pro serving out video using Playback.

Plex does go through https. They've got native apps for pretty much all possible devices too.

I don't want it to go thru https. I need something that's compleatly local. Not cataloged or served by/ uploaded to an outside source.

Plex does work local unless you wish to share outside. I use it locally without issue. Granted if you want cover art and synopsis anything will have to go online to get that. But for local play it works without an internet connection. Been using it for years.

I ended up going with plex as it did most of the things I was looking for. The thing I liked about Playback was that it kept my file organization (I'm very anal with that) but the transcoding and GUI is pretty awesome.

Now I have run into a new problem, I need an application that can real time sync my music, photo and video files to my synology NAS as a backup. It would be great if I could have this go both ways but just a one way real time sync would be ok.

Any suggestions?
