Hi all,
I’ve recently stupidly melted some of the keys on my 2017 MacBook Pro because I was using a blowdrier on an excessively hot setting to get rid of crumbs under the keys, thinking it’d come out, unfortunately it did not and now I have 9 malfunctioning keys, about 5 of which are absolutely mangled from the heat, does anyone happen to know how much it’d cost to replace the 9 keys or will they force me to replace the full keyboard? I just lifted up one of the melted key caps and all the parts underneath seem to be in order, so I suspect it’ll just be a key cap replacement, but I’m unsure and any help regarding the issue would be greatly appreciated. Picture is attached.
Cheers,

Bring it to your local Apple Store and, as shameful as it may be, ask them the price of a repair; I'm unsure since I only know that the free replacement program covers a lot of damage (never seen this)

Several years ago I was working outside on a day in the 70's and brought my MBP with me for some entertainment. The MBP was in the sun and after about an hour I noticed that some of the keys had melted.

The MBP was still under AppleCare, and after explaining to Apple what had happened, I sent it in to their repair depot for a free repair.

I surmise the keyboard keys are made of some type of plastic with a rather low melting point. I guess Apple's designers don't think users should expose Apple laptops to sun, or else they would use plastics with a higher melting point. Luckily carmakers have figured that out so their dashboards don't melt when exposed to high temps.

 I'd like to say that surely can't be right, but then this is the company that's designed and shipped a keyboard that ceases to function it so much as gets a grain of sand in underneath it! Really good thing their customer aftercare is so good!

Is it still under the warranty? If it is, then go to the Apple and lie to them, tell them the keys melted when you left it in the sun.

Otherwise, this is not covered by warranty, And when Apple is fixing the products not under the warranty, that is usually a highway robbery.

[doublepost=1540121310][/doublepost]It's a good idea hahaha, but main concern is that it's literally five keys in a row, and looks like it's from a concentrated heat source rather than just being openly left out in the sun. Appreciate your help though!

2017, so I am guessing it was purchased pre-Apple Care Plus w/ accidental damage protection?

Between the heat related melting and if they do a diagnostic on it and determine that the moisture sensors have triggered, I am guessing you are looking at an out of pocket keyboard replacement.

I am not even sure that ADP would cover the keyboard damage. The water spill is an accident, melting the keys with a hair dryer is more a self inflicted wound after the accident.

That mistake is gonna cost you about $700-800.

You can't just "replace the keyboard".
The ENTIRE TOP CASE has to be swapped out -- keyboard, case, battery.

I wouldn't try that heat-dryer trick again... :(

Hope you get that free repair. There’s also the original problem of the water and if there’s evidence of water damage you might be in for a big bill.

Hey how you have solved the problem i have the same problem

I also had a few hairdryer mistakes, not as bad as yours tho.

It has a terrible low pressure fan inside, but it's usually 1500W (like a small oven), so if anyone comes across it, hairdryer is a terrible fan, but could be a good oven if necessary
