I just had my beautiful PM G4 D1.25 MDD begin folding.
As I see it, it doesn't matter what kind of machine you have; just let it work for the benefit of all of us. IMHO, I think you should look at the cumulative effect from all participating computers, instead of wondering if your "old" computer will make a difference.
Just consider if we reasoned in the same way when it came to voting. We wouldn't have democracy then, would we?

Thank you for joining the folding team Dr.Gargoyle. Your thinking is correct, ay least you are willing to participate. Every little bit helps the team. If more of our members would just do the same.

Just what are the needs of Folding? I am thinking of using the computer in the kitchen (only used for solitaire ;)). My biggest question is how much will this tax my internet? I have satellite internet and it is usually very slow on uploads. Also, can I continue folding if I have to shut down the computer every now and then?

We should seek new blood, and go after those who have since stopped!
Like zim said, there have been threads on the matter, with many good ideas, and no official acknowledgement, let alone action. "We", as a coherent group, don't exist.

In other news, should finally be getting a working desktop machine on monday  - it's been too long. Dread to think how far I've fallen in the rankings over the past 6 months.

It wouldn't harm updating FAQ. Ham_man's question: How much will this tax my internet? clearly indicates this. The info about double proc is out of date as I see it (?). The latest version of f@h seem to handle dual proc.

not much. internet use happens in short, infrequent spurts, only when a WU (work unit) is downloaded or uploaded, and when a new core is downloaded (infrequent).

i've never really tracked the size of the WUs, i don't think the results are much more than a couple megs, if that.

a solitaire-only computer is great, since it can spend the rest of the time folding! i hope you decide to give it a try.

Most WU are about 1.3 MB when finished, so that's all that has to be uploaded. For downloads, it's a lot less. A new WU is about 50-100KB. Stanford has a default computer (for calculating the time a WU needs to finish), they have celeron's with 500 mhz. If you have your computer on 24/7 and you have an internet connection, just let it fold. Ham Man, good to have you, and welcome to the team!!
