Hey all. It's happened. I hit the wall. I CANNOT figure out what's happening. I have a UAD satellite and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (audio engineer FTW) into my macbook pro 15", 2012. I THINK I notice this most when the saffire and UAD are turned on, but I say that and I'm pretty sure this was a problem before I bought them.

So what happens is I'll be doing something - usually internet related, but I do a lot of that - and suddenly the Mac screeches to a halt. I'm running iStat menus, and I see my memory build and build and build until it's totally all used up - about 100%. THEN the memory goes from about 100% -> 25%, then builds back to ~50%, which is normal, and I'm back to running a normal computer again. WTF?

I've also noticed this a lot since the update to Mavericks and - please - I'm looking for a better solution than "reinstall the OS." I want to know what's happening.

    Tech specs!
    Macbook Pro 15", summer 2012
    2.6 GHz i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz RAM
    600GB 7200 RPM HD

    Console shiz!

I'm so sorry I put so much console stuff. Truly, I'm normally pretty good at sifting through the console BS, but this has me totally at a loss, and I don't even know what I'm looking for. Is it XPD related? Memory stuff? Does it have to do with the preferences files? The launchd failures? The memory status idles? I've done total maintenance overhauls (techtools, onyx, cleanmymac) to the computer, but to no avail. I've reset PRAM, SMC...It's probably pretty obvious this one has me stumped.

    Any ideas?

I've had a few ram issues since I got my Air in 2011. It's mostly been kernel_task. It would go crazy with ram and cpu usage, ultimately making the MacBook freeze. I've read a lot about it and searched for quite some time. But I could never pinpoint the exact problem.

What I've noticed then is, if I move my laptop a lot, thus also unplugging my usb peripherals, these problems might occur. When I was going to college, I took my laptop with me everyday, and back at home I'd plug back in my external hdd, printer etc. that's when the problems started happening.

And this year, my laptop was almost 100% stationed on my desk and I didn't unplug anything, the problems never occurred. When I again started moving it because I needed it to tether a camera project. i.e. unplugging usb and putting them back in again, the problems came back.

So I'm now sure it's a bug with the usb ports. I have a powered usb hub connected to the Air and to that, I got a printer, Apple wired keyboard, 2 external drives and a 'ethernet to usb' adapter connected. So it's quite a list and I think this is making the Air go crazy.

I mention this because you've also listed two of those things (whatever they are :p) that are connected to your Mac and you think they might cause the problems.

After my Mac froze once, I got a error report or something and in this report it mentioned the kernel_taks and the list with all those peripherals I connected to it. Kernel is also listed in your console. (though that could be anything, I don't know much about the programming part.)

So see if this might be the problem, if you're moving your laptop around much and how many things are connected to it. This might very well be it.
