Hey guys,

I've been a long-time fan of macrumors, and have frequently lurked through these message boards and enjoyed reading all your opinions. I never actually got around to making an account until now, though, and I hope you'll forgive me for my first post being a request of help.

I worked and saved for 10 months, and finally on my lap is a brand new MBP (2.4). And boy is it a beautiful machine. But here's my problem. I bought the MBP at my school's bookstore (they had an awesome deal: buy the computer for the ed-discount of $1899, get the Apple Care free), and because of that it's the standard config. I'd always been planning on upgrading the memory to 4GB when I bought it, but now I'll have to do that on my own.

I also own a Canon HV20, and will be using this MBP on a pretty much daily basis for video editing (the FCS suite) and the like. And from everything I've read, upgrading the memory will help considerably with this. But there are loads of options, and not being the MOST technologically-savvy guy out there, some of the details (DDR 2/3, 667/800 MHZ, etc.) dont make the most sense to me.

So I guess what I'm wondering is if maybe any of you would be willing to either help explain or help pick out the right memory upgrade for me. Here's one I was looking at:

http://www.buy.com/prod/kingston-4g...n-sodimm-ddr2-laptop/q/loc/101/206684926.html

EDIT: Here's another option I found, for comparison:
http://www.buy.com/prod/crucial-4gb...066mhz-ddr3-1066-pc3/q/loc/101/210227383.html

Would that upgrade my system? I assume it would, but I can't be sure...I dont know if 2 GB of DDR III is better than 4 GB of DDR II, etc.

Also, if there is a better upgrade out there (which doesn't carry a too-hefty price tag), I'd love it if any of you could point me there.

Thanks for any help,
Oliver

I didnt know the DDR3 prices went back up a bit. Do you have the latest MBP the unibody?

If so, it would take : 2GB SO-DIMMs of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM to up your RAM to 4GB

I bought my 4GB RAM from Crucial official website for about 50 bucks 2 months back. The price is 68 right now. In the Crucial official website, you can select the Manufacturer, Make of your laptop and it will suggest you the required memory for upgrading purposes.

OWC has them for 60 bucks: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/8566DDR3S4GP/

Crucial has them for 67 bucks:

My preference, go with crucial but its your call.
