We're just about to upgrade to the 13 Pro Max from the iPhone 5! Yes, 5 not even 5C!

Our 5's have 64Gb memory and I was wondering what memory we should get for the upgrade.

One of us is a great photo taker but apart from that and about 40Gb of music we will not store much on there. Currently, we get the message about there not being enough room for all the photos so we must be at the limit.

I was thinking, therefore, about the 256Gb model. The 13 must create bigger files for photos but not four times as big surely? So, will this be enough.

An impossible question of course but your guidance would be most appreciated.

Cheers.

If you take videos using the ProRes codec on the 13PM, the file sizes are enormous. So 256 GB would be the minimum.

I would say 256GB should be fine but given the fact that you keep your phones for a very long time I would recommend going with 512GB to hold you over without too much worry.

Also with you both coming from a iPhone 5, have you given a retail 13 Pro Max a go? It’s a much larger and much heavier device, if you haven’t tried it yet I suggest you do as I think it may be a tad bit of a shock when you are coming from that far back.

With that said, here is where my 256GB 11 Pro Max is sitting…

You can check how much space is used by going into Settings / General / iPhone Storage

Is ProRes even available to use on 128GB models? Don't think so.
I think so, you need at least the 256GB model.

As for which to get, if you plan on keeping it for that long since the 5, go big or go home, get 1TB, I did lol, I had a 3yr XS Max 512GB, so was time to upgrade, plus I store a lot of my content on my phone, just not enough space to keep up with new stuff without the 1TB option, for me anyway, as for photos, I don't really take photos, so idk the file size, but, they have the Live Images, they do take up more space, then ability to shoot, I think, in 4K, plus the Pro/Pro Max having Promotion is great, I saw a huge difference when comparing it to my XS Max.

Did the iPhone 5 series get the update that gave us that iPhone Storage section? I can't remember how it was before that, I remember the about would tell you space available, but not show what's taking up what.

Thank you very much everyone - lots to think about.

Now I have a new problem: if I get one with too much storage I'll probably have to keep for as long as I did the iPhone5! If I get a lesser one it'll fill up quicker and, hey presto, time for a new one! ;)

Or you could just -- delete a bunch of crap that you don't need. How many pictures of the same birthday cake from 10 different angles do you really need?

Haha, it may be best to balance it out with decent iCloud+ storage then. Get a 256GB 13 Pro Max and 2TB iCloud+ to offload what you don’t need in your local storage.

My two cents

This day and age I felt the 512GB was good for me coming from a 256 GB

128 GB is baseline now but on the 13 Pro Max that I and you have it’s a disservice to not at least get 256GB so you unlock all of the devices features

It’s not a problem. Just sell some storage on here.

Also I would suggest you handle a Pro Max to see if you really want such a large device

I would assume you would go from a i5 to a i13 Mini

Technically, the iPhone 5c is just a 5 in plastic chassis anyway. The actual successor was the 5s. ;)

Depends if you're shooting RAW photos or just normal HEIC. HEIC is actually smaller/more efficient than JPEGs. Meanwhile, RAW could be 10x as big.

The photos we take are mostly just family photos (during get-togethers) that get posted on Facebook, etc. For that, HEIF and 128GB storage is more than good enough.

If you do photography as a hobby, then you'd probably want more storage.

Dont forget you can always use iCloud storage, I am not a fan of it but it is an option.

That’s up to you on how often you upgrade. I usually do every couple years

That is excellent everyone thank you very much.
I'm constrained by what SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) wants as it's her money too! I can almost hear you all saying that I am ... "hen-pecked" we call it in the UK.
However, I will go for the big screen (eyesight!) and the 256Gb for sensible space but not so much that I can't persuade her, in the future, that keeping a phone for 9 years is a good idea!
Cheers.

I find 256 is a great size for most. Last 2 phones I’ve gone that storage size with no regrets.

  • ProRes video recording up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB storage)
No matter what you do, imho get at least 256, or you do not get pro-res.

A 128 really limits the phone.

I am waiting for delivery of a 13 pro.
And still on a 7.
