I have an iPhone 3GS with 8GB and iOS 5.1.1
    *
Practical available memory is usually 6+GB
    *
Yesterday, when I last backed up, my memory was about half full, a combination of music (0.9GB), photos (0.16GB) and apps (1.4GB).
    *
Just now, not even 24 hrs later, I see my memory usage has jumped up to nearly 5GB, leaving only 1.57GB free. When I look in iTunes, the yellow "other" bar now accounts for 2.2GB but I know I did not add anything there.
    *
The only new thing is that system settings notifies me it wants to install iOS6. I do not want to upgrade. Could it be that the phone downloaded the upgrade, even though I did not tell it to?
    *
If it is not the new OS waiting to be installed, what could it possibly be? And how do I get rid of all that bloat?
    *
    Please advise, thanks in advance!

It will download iOS 6 OTA updates for when you want to update it, but it will only do so when connected to WiFi. There's no easy way to get rid of it.

Shucks. Is there a not-so-easy way to get rid of it?

    Thanks for your reply.

Jailbreak it, delete the file, wait for it to be redownloaded, repeat.
