merge calls

hi,

i have an unlocked US iphone in the UK. I want to be able to merge calls, but for some reason can't. Is it because i'm on vodafone? do i need to call them for it to be activated? when i press merge calls it tries for a second and the reverts back to 2 separate calls.

Maybe its a carrier limitation? A definite way to make sure is just to call Vodafone or look it up online.
