Merge two apple id's

I want to merge an older apple id I created some years ago, with my current id. Both have different email addresses associated. In both I have made purchases.
Can I merge them?

Log out of your current ID, log in with the old ID, install apps. You will be asked to log in with each ID as appropriate to update apps. Currently there is no way to merge IDs or transfer apps between IDs.

lots of people want this,
even more so since iCloud.
at the moment, i have a iCloud apple id, and a iTunes apple id.
its a pain

hopefully sometime soon, apple will sort it
